Commissioned earlier this year and painted in my studio on panels, this painting is about my home town, Kaikoura. I love nothing more than sitting on my surfboard out behind the waves looking up at the 2500m peaks of the Kaikoura seaward ranges. The ribbon that carries through the painting links the mountains to the sea. Kaikoura has an amazing and diverse range of flora and fauna, along with some extremely deep ocean.

This commission was so much fun to paint. The client originally wanted a copper patina finish on the whole wall but after a visit to my studio they decided to go more abstract. Based on the backgrounds of some of my paintings from 2015 I got to it on the wall with the idea of a semi copper patina finish. This was both a demanding painting and one of the most enjoyable processes I have done for a long time. There is a lot going on with the application, colour , texture and movement. To make this painting work it is all about finding the balance between all these elements, hence the name of the painting.
